I cover the latest developments in the Scott Beauchamp saga in today's AmSpec column.

John, I have couple of quibbles with your latest here. First off, you're wrong that the transcript "came from the Army Public Affairs Officer who was on Beauchamp's end of the call." There was no PA Officer on Beauchamp's end; the young man who was there was the lowest-ranking enlisted man in the 4th IBCT's Public Affairs shop at FOB Falcon, a very good kid (who lacks both the authority and the initiative to leak information to the media) named Ben Washburn. A bit on him here.
Second, while I've been rebuked by some who aren't ready to forgive STB, I'm willing to give him a second chance. I think I have pretty good reason to do so, but of course, it's just one man's opinion. I was with embedded with the 4th IBCT out of Falcon and one of their COPs back in April and May, but didn't make it there my last trip out, so my info is all secondhand (a very, very good secondhand, but secondhand all the same).
Third, I know why Drudge pulled the story from his site, and it had nothing to do with accuracy. Feel free to email if you're interested.
I just read the transcript and the letter of concern and counseling... brought back memories of my own big mouth getting this former Marine in trouble, but nothing like Private B is now enduring. Having read the CO's final remarks, I'm willing to give the kid a chance.
Before I say any more though, I'm going to read what Jeff Emanuel has written. I must admit I love Jeff's reports from Iraq. He makes me feel like I'm right there. Jeff, Sir, if you happen to read this, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the men and women whose stories you bring to life. Semper Fi, buddy.
